Background

Factory farming is the biggest form of animal cruelty on the planet and one of the biggest contributors to climate change Our mission is to end factory farming. We are looking for a communications specialist, with experience in leading press, social media and digital communications strategies. This role has overall responsibility for increasing public awareness of our issues, the organisation and the potential solutions as a way of driving change and ending factory farming. You will lead a team at HQ, and coordinate work across Europe and beyond. This role encompasses global work, in an organisation that is on the brink of investing in and pushing for real growth. You will contribute, as a leader in our Global Engagement Team, to driving forward shared and integrated bold targets for the organisation, including increasing our supporter base. Your role is to set the overarching communications approach and strategy for the organisation; serving campaigns and fundraising, including proactive communications management, leading media activities and messaging, supporting international offices’ communications and media teams, and driving continuous improvement in our communications.

OVERALL OBJECTIVE(S) OF THE POST

Overall responsibility for increasing public awareness of our issues, the organisation and the potential solutions as a way of driving change and ending factory farming. This role encompasses global work, in an organisation that is on the brink of investing in and pushing for real growth. Contributes, as a leader in our Global Engagement Team, to driving forward shared and integrated bold targets including increasing our supporter base and ‘voices’ – particularly our aim to secure 10 million voices by 2022. Sets the overarching communications approach and strategy for the organisation; serving campaigns and fundraising including proactive brand and communications management, leading media activities and messaging, supporting international offices communications and media teams, and driving continuous improvement in our communications. 

POSITION IN ORGANISATION

  • Reports to the Director of Campaigns, member of the Campaigns Dept. Also part of the Global Engagement virtual team, who report jointly on progress against organisational objectives to Director of Campaigns and Director of International Fundraising Growth.
  • Responsible for the line management of the HQ Communications team
  • Close working relationship with Head of Public Campaigns
  • Current direct reports are Media Manager x 2 (1 on fixed term contract) and Broadcast Officer. This team is expected to expand and develop in the short-medium term.

SCOPE OF JOB

  • Overall responsibility for driving UK and European communications activity and results, particularly media and social media. Responsible for developing messaging and lines-to-take for different audiences ensuring compliance with our positioning and mission.
  • Responsible, with Global Engagement team, for increasing our supporter base in line with our strategic plan.
  • Creation, development and oversight of outstanding public messaging strategies, with support from Director of Campaigns
  • Monitoring and evaluation of communications work
  • Strategic overview of communications opportunities, including detailed knowledge of the roll out of each campaign ‘moment’, including developing these moments for a media audience. In depth understanding of the ‘now and next’ of each campaign.
  • Producing reports and information on the communications work of the organisation for internal audiences
  • Enhancing the public profile and perception of Compassion in World Farming and in particular that of its Chief Executive.
  • Maximising media opportunities and media integration across key sectors of operation, including international offices, and the departments of Campaigns, Food Business and Research.
  • Ensuring excellent co-ordination with the Policy team.

DIMENSIONS & LIMITS OF AUTHORITY

  • Responsible for the comms and media spend within the campaign budget
  • Responsible for the direction and management of the Communications  team
  • Sign off on all media materials, with authority for issuing these.
  • Engages with all organisational activities that may provide a platform for enhancing the organisation’s and the CEO’s public profile and perception.
  • Overview of all campaign related communications, in whatever form (not including fundraising communications)
  • Suggests action to take on difficult cases.

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES

Essential duties and responsibilities include the following:  Other duties may be assigned.

Development                                                                                                            

  • To play a key role in the strategic development of Compassion in World Farming, particularly focusing on developing increased public awareness of Compassion and our campaigning objectives in Europe
  • To ensure that Compassion’s messaging engages the public to achieve impactful coverage of our issues and influence public opinion, as well as those who shape, make or fund public policy relating to farm animal welfare.
  • To secure quality coverage in the food industry sector media in support of our organisational aim to place farm animal welfare at the heart of the food industry.
  • To provide strategic assistance, support and training for Compassion’s European and international staff to empower them to deliver effective communications work in their countries.
  • To ensure the fundraising teams, particularly major gifts, have the information they require of stewardship

Raising Awareness and Profile of Compassion

  • Develop relationships with key staff, journalists and celebrities.
  • Manage all Communications staff and external agencies employed by those teams
  • Plan and implement media strategies
  • Oversee the implementation of those strategies
  • Develop media specific activities as part of campaigns plans
  • Oversee Compassion’s Public Relations programme, including that part of the programme relating to the CEO and his role as chief spokesperson.
  • Sign-off some public facing campaigns materials including messaging, media releases and some supporter comms
  • Maintain an out-of-hours service from the Media team.
  • Develop and implement crisis management systems and plans.
  • Coordinate media interviews and organise media training for Compassion staff.
  • Support the Director of Campaigns in the development of policy and position statements.
  • Evaluate the work of the communications team against key performance indicators.

Staff Development                                                                                                   

  • To ensure appropriate staff development and training, including where required specialist media coaching.
  • To delegate tasks that fall with your scope effectively across the teams
  • Personal development: to manage workload effectively, with support from Director of Campaigns, to ensure healthy work-life balance and feasible portfolio of activities

Administration                                                                                                          

  • To ensure the correct maintenance of the department’s budgetary and other records

Candidate requirements

We are looking for an exceptional individual with:

  • Demonstrable experience in a senior media and/or campaigning role
  • Strong strategic capacity
  • Background in Public Relations
  • Strong team leadership
  • Excellent communications skills
  • Ability to develop and implement public awareness/media strategies
  • Ability to manage budgets
  • Capacity to work within a team to deliver organisational aspirations
  • Excellent proof-reading skills
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills, both oral and written
  • Good relationship building skills
  • Ability to work on own initiative
