Compassion in World Farming International was founded in 1967 in England by Peter Roberts, a British farmer who became horrified by the development of intensive factory farming. Over 50 years ago, Peter decided to make a difference and take a stand against this farming system. In his lifetime, Peter saw the demise of veal crates and gestation crates in the UK, and in Europe, achieved recognition that animals are sentient beings.
This is an exciting time to join the Global Philanthropy team at Compassion in World Farming and contribute to delivering their mission to end factory farming. With growing awareness of the impact of factory farming, not only on animal welfare, but on human health and the environment, now is a unique moment to help raise money for Compassion’s work and bring new supporters on board.
Annual gross income to Compassion was £14.1 M GBP in FY21/22, a growth of 57% since 2020. The Global Philanthropy team has a strong track record, increasing income from £300 K in 2012/13 to over £5.2 M in 2022/23. Compassion has just launched a new three-year strategy, alongside a fundraising growth plan that aims to significantly grow income by 2030.
To achieve this, the Global Philanthropy team is expanding in the coming year. This brand-new role will focus on growing philanthropic fundraising in mainland European markets (primarily France, Belgium, Luxemburg, and Switzerland) in support of our global objectives and deliverables.
Working remotely in one of the European countries where Compassion works, you will establish and execute a fundraising strategy to grow income from philanthropic donors (primarily trusts and foundations, and also HNWIs) who are able to give €10 K+ EUR. You will manage a small number of existing donors, and your focus will be on new business to fund our core budget work internationally. You will be a skilled relationship builder, networker and a confident and passionate advocate for Compassion’s work.
You will be part of the Global Philanthropy team (an English-speaking team) and have a strong connection to Compassion’s teams in France and Brussels to explore our funding networks, identify funding opportunities, and distil complex project information into compelling proposals. Strong relationship management skills, an ability to think creatively, and excellent writing skills are essential, along with a level of financial acumen. Mastery of French and English are essential, with knowledge of other European languages an advantage.
You will report to the International Head of Philanthropy as part of a dynamic and supportive team of 11 major gift and trust fundraisers based in the UK, Europe and the USA.
