Background

The Energy Transition Fund is a funder collaborative that was established in 2019 to support regional and global strategies to stop and delay new oil and gas infrastructure, and to create the conditions for a just and equitable phase-out of oil and gas production, in line with the Paris Agreement climate limits.

Job description

POSITION SUMMARY

The Campaign Communications Strategist is responsible for helping ETF build impactful communications strategies to support the phase out of oil and gas and undermine the social licence of the oil and gas industry, while working with broad partnerships to drive those strategies. This position will centre powerful and inspiring communications into the work that ETF and our partners are doing.

AREAS OF OVERSIGHT

  • Building ETF’s communications strategy around oil and gas phase out, just transition, and social licence, recognizing that narrative shift is a critical component of systems change.

  • Coordinating and convening communications-led campaign strategies, tools, resources, and output with allies across civil society.

  • Scaling up global civil society communications capacity to advocate for a transition from oil and gas.

  • Identifying and acting on new communications opportunities and strategic threats.

  • Building relationships with new partners focused on communications and social licence. 

 

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

Expertise

  • Ability to create impactful messaging including narrative analysis, strategic framing, and compelling storytelling.

  • Experience in digital campaigning, mobilisation and movement building.

  • Understanding of audience research and analysis to pinpoint motivations and values and identify opportunities.

  • Ability to design strategies that can shift public perceptions.

  • Advises ETF colleagues on good communication planning and strategies.

  • Maintains a deep understanding of the global oil and gas sector and civil society issues and provides strategic communications expertise and insight.

  • Experience with cultural campaigning and familiarity with social licence work. 

Innovation & Strategy

  • Maintains awareness of the narratives around gas lock-in and creates strategies and campaigns to undermine narratives around gas as an alternative or bridging fuel.

  • Engages with civil society and funding partners to co-design new communications strategies on oil and gas; sets clear objectives for those strategies and benchmarks progress against agreed objectives.

  • Maintains a responsive, creative and innovative approach to public campaigns and identifies opportunities to tap into broader cultural moments and narratives.

  • Maintains a system to actively scan for opportunities and threats and innovates within the communications portfolio. 

  • Proactively scopes new opportunities to build up and expand fundable strategies on oil and gas communications.

Global Collaboration

  • Experience working on global issues and a keen understanding of how different approaches are needed within different regions and cultures.  

  • Ability to build meaningful and respectful relationships with diverse partners, including across cultures, and approach relationships with a highly collaborative mindset.

Grantmaking & Partnership

  • Collaborates closely with existing partners and grantees to scale communications skills, connect them with resources, align messaging with other partners, and increase message impact..

  • Builds trusting and respectful relationships with grantees and stewards them through the grantmaking and reporting process.

  • Develops and manages a communications focused grantmaking portfolio that drives forward ETF’s established strategies.

Team Collaboration

  • Provides support to other members of ETF as needed.

  • Develops, completes or manages ad hoc projects as directed.

  • Work with colleagues to put into action ETF’s organisational and strategic plans.

  • Participates in operational planning.

  • Collaborates with colleagues to help ensure the best outcomes for ETF and our partners.

Candidate requirements

ETF is seeking a Campaign Communications Strategist.  The ideal candidate is a creative and innovative communications strategist who is driven by the urgent need to mitigate the worst impacts of climate change. They should possess at least 5 years of demonstrated success in impactful communications work, have a solid understanding of the sociopolitical issues related to oil and gas, have demonstrated campaign skills and the ability to build strong relationships across a range of organisations

WORK ENVIRONMENT

ETF operates globally. Most team members choose to work from their home, but there are some reimbursements for local office rentals if that is preferred.   Work hours are flexible but staff will at times be expected to attend meetings that are outside of normal daytime hours.  Some international and regional travel will be required.  A computer and other office equipment will be provided.
