Energy Transition Fund


The Energy Transition Fund is a funder collaborative that was established in 2019 to support regional and global strategies to stop and delay new oil and gas infrastructure, and to create the conditions for a just and equitable phase-out of oil and gas production, in line with the Paris Agreement climate limits.

Job description


  • Lead the co-design of diplomatic strategies for oil and gas with key partners, including NGOs and funders

  • Build and maintain close relationships with key partners including the Beyond Oil and Gas Alliance to identify ways to support ambitious diplomatic strategies that create momentum toward phasing out oil and gas

  • Line manages a team member who will work to shift international finance from oil and gas to clean energy, including co-designing strategy and grantmaking

  • Continually scans the landscape to understand how the oil and gas industry is attempting to block the energy transition and design strategies to mitigate

  • Is responsible for helping build ETF’s organisational and operational strategies.

Diplomacy, Strategy and Partnerships

  • Leads  the design of ambitious diplomatic strategies to support a transition from oil and gas in collaboration with stakeholders and funding partners

  • Thought leaders with a keen understanding of energy geopolitics and diplomacy, policy development and international relations

  • Horizon scanning - opportunities and threats

  • Provides thought leadership on oil and gas strategy within the organisation and broader philanthropic sector - sets high levels of ambition and inculcates a culture of risk-taking, experimentation and creativity

  • Participates in the development and presentation of an annual global grant making strategy to the Steering Committee & specific regional / thematic strategies as appropriate

  • Maintains productive and impactful relationships with key actors in the international climate arena 

  • Builds meaningful and respectful relationships with diverse partners, including across cultures, and approaches relationships with a highly collaborative mindset


    Fundraising and Funder Support 

  • Assists the Executive Director in raising funds to fulfil the mission

  • Assists in reporting to funders

  • Fosters constructive relationships with funders and is viewed as a thought leader within the sector

  • Participates in the development of a set of products to use for outreach to new foundations (strategic overview, regional strategies, global strategies on key issues) 

  • Attends key foundation gatherings related to areas of oversight

  • Under the direction of the Executive Director serves as a resource for funders on opportunities for aligned funding to further ETF’s mission

  • Oversees writing of and writes proposals and reports for foundations 


 Management and Leadership 

  • Helps support / build ETF’s internal culture, leads by example

  • Responsible for participating in the hiring and retention of competent staff within areas of oversight

  • Participates in fostering a work culture that reflects the organisation’s values, rewards productivity, encourages good performance / standards, high employee morale and enthusiasm

  • Acts as a member of the organisation's Senior Leadership Team and participates in organisational development

  • Participates in strategic planning and monitors progress to ensure achievement of plans

  • Meets often and regularly with team to foster collaboration

  • Participates in performance evaluation systems and processes related to line managed staff

  • Continually supports line managed staff and participates, as appropriate, in their development

  • Plans appropriately for succession within areas of oversight and ensures systems are in place for continuity during absences

  • Represents areas of oversight to the Steering Committee

  • Undertakes or commissions sector-relevant research and analysis to inform the effective development, delivery and evaluation of programmes and initiatives.


   Grant Making Oversight

  • Develops grant making strategies and builds a portfolio of grantees 

  • Undertakes screening of potential grantees and approves new grantees from areas of oversight before presentation to the Steering Committee

  • Oversees grantee relationships within areas of oversight

  • Liaises with operations staff to ensure administrative burdens on grantees is reduced

  • Ensures grant reporting is timely and accurate

  • Identifies areas of risk and barriers to success for grantees and provides mitigation strategies and supports as appropriate


Candidate requirements

ETF is seeking a Program and Strategy Director focusing on Diplomacy and Finance.  The ideal candidate is a creative and innovative leader who is driven by the urgent need to mitigate the worst impacts of climate change. They should have at least 8 years of experience in the environmental field, have a strong understanding of finance and sociopolitical issues related to oil and gas, and demonstrated success with diplomacy work.  They should also be able to build strong relationships across a range of organisations.

ETF operates globally. Most team members choose to work from their home, but there are some reimbursements for local office rentals if that is preferred.   Work hours are flexible but staff will at times be expected to attend meetings that are outside of normal daytime hours.  Some international and regional travel will be required.  A computer and other office equipment will be provided.
