Research Manager Food Business EU

Compassion in World Farming International

Background

Compassion in World Farming International is the leading international farm animal welfare charity, campaigning to improve the lives of millions of farm animals through advocacy, lobbying for legislative change, and positive engagement with the global food industry. Our established international Food Business programme aims to raise baseline standards for farm animals by securing commitments, ensuring compliance and facilitating implementation of higher welfare policies and practices. In addition, we aim to drive corporate meat reduction strategies and targets in line with planetary health requirements, via our newly launched Rethinking Food workstream.

Our work is based on scientific evidence and best practice and as such we are recognised as the credible partner on farm animal welfare to the major food retailers, food service companies, manufacturers and producers.

We are now looking for a skilled farm animal welfare scientist to join our Food Business team. The Research Manager (Europe) Food Business will contribute to the further development and ongoing management of our technical resources, advisory service to the European food industry, and scientific network on farm animal welfare issues and solutions, which underpin the credibility of our programme. The role will also provide technical support and knowledge transfer within our food business team, the wider organization and externally to corporate partners and wider stakeholder groups.

The right candidate will have a proven scientific background, good practical knowledge of farm animal welfare, and a commercial awareness of livestock production. You will also need to be able to condense large volumes of scientific evidence into succinct summaries and cases of support for the welfare change we ask. The role will require developing and delivering multiple workflows to deadline, with a strong problem solving ‘can do’ attitude. Cross-species knowledge, ideally with a focus on poultry and pigs, is required.

Compassion in World Farming International HQ is located in bright, modern offices; just 2 minutes’ walk from Godalming mainline station (45 minutes from London Waterloo). Regular international travel, mainly in Europe but occasionally outside Europe as well, will be required.

Compassion in World Farming International is absolutely committed to providing equal opportunities for everyone regardless of their background. We value diversity and lived experience, and acknowledge the underrepresentation of people from certain backgrounds, both within our organisation and across the sector. We welcome applications from underrepresented groups, whether these be of ethnicity, gender, identity, religion, physical ability, sexual orientation or other.

Please note that the remuneration quoted is for a UK based employee.  This may be adjusted for other European countries as appropriate and in line with our country office benchmarking.

Job description

Job title:                                 Research Manager EU

Department:                           Food Business

Salary:                                    £30,000 – £35,000 UK based (dependent upon experience)

Background:

Compassion in World Farming was founded in 1967 by Peter Roberts, a British dairy farmer, in response to the rise of intensive animal factory farming. In his lifetime, Compassion was instrumental in the legislative bans on barren battery cages, veal crates, and sow stalls in the UK and Europe, and the recognition of animals as sentient beings. Today, we are the leading international farm animal welfare charity, campaigning to end factory farming and improve the lives of farm animals through advocacy, lobbying for legislative change, and driving corporate policies and practices. Our Food Business programme delivers impact for animals by raising baseline standards throughout the supply of leading food companies, and via our newly launched Rethinking Food workstream, we aim to drive corporate meat reduction strategies and targets in line with future food requirements.
