Background

Background / About the role:

Transport & Environment (T&E), Europe's leading clean transport think tank and campaign group, is looking to for maternity cover to maintain the direction of Europe’s most important clean freight programme during a crucial moment in some campaigns. Fast growing emissions from trucks and vans now account for a quarter of transport emissions in Europe. As the maternity cover Freight Director you will be supporting the existing team to maintain course during the leave of the current Freight Director. You’ll be leading a small team in Brussels and coordinate the work of our partners at national level. Leadership experience is key to this position as you will be managing a team of highly effective individuals.

Job description

Specifically, you will:

  • Help allocate tasks and decide priorities, provide regular feedback and coaching to the team.
  • Support the team in their work on T&E’s EU regulatory strategy focusing on key regulations such as the revision of EU truck, bus and van CO2 standards, EURO VII standards, and the alternative-fuel infrastructure directive.
  • Support the team in their work on delivering the clean freight programme, overseeing the successful implementation of national strategies to promote zero-emission trucks and vans, especially in liaison with T&E national offices (in DE, ES, FR, IT, PL and UK).
  • In coordination with the Senior Director, support the implementation of T&E’s advocacy strategy towards high level EU and national regulators, politicians and media.
  • Support the team in their efforts to build partnerships with key freight industry players such as haulers, logistics companies and leading shippers, and in particular ensuring T&E’s contribution to the European Clean Trucking Alliance.
  • Manage grants and oversee the commissioning and delivery of impactful research (including market research, testing etc).

Candidate requirements

  • Five to ten years of relevant experience in a management position in the EU advocacy sector.
  • The ability to follow and support short-, medium- and long-term team strategies designed to create change in a complex and at times conservative industry.
  • Proven leadership skills and an effective coaching and management style.
  • A positive, can-do attitude with high work autonomy levels.
  • The ability to understand and communicate complex issues clearly and with impact.
  • A solid grasp of the EU political system and the role of member states in EU decision making.

Additional comments

T&E will offer you a competitive salary in line with your experience and expertise, extensive benefits and exceptional flexibility. The position is based in Brussels, and we have a flexible approach to working hours, in discussion with your line manager and team.
