Background

Global Fishing Watch is promoting ocean sustainability through greater transparency. We use cutting-edge technology to visualise, track and share data about global fishing activity in near real-time and for free.

Global Fishing Watch is an international non-profit organisation, originally set up through a collaboration between three partners: Oceana, an international ocean conservation organisation; SkyTruth, experts in using satellite technology to protect the environment; and Google, who provide the tools for processing big data.

 

Job description

Global Fishing Watch is recruiting a Senior Communications Manager responsible for supporting implementation of our global communications strategy. The successful candidate will bring strong experience in developing and managing strategic communications, media relations and editorial content, along with a keen interest in marine conservation. Experience in NGO or science communications a plus. Other languages desirable, particularly Spanish. Full description here.

Candidate requirements

  • At least 7 years of direct experience in positions with communications responsibilities, with experience as a strategic communications, media relations and/or science communications professional preferred
  • Proven track record of developing and delivering high profile communications strategies. Experience in public policy or campaigns is a plus. Experience in Latin America an advantage.
  • Significant, demonstrable experience in delivering large-scale communications campaigns within a complex stakeholder landscape.
  • Experience in all aspects of communications delivery, from PR and media to events and social media.
  •  Excellent oral communication, writing, and editing skills, with ease in expressing complex concepts and issues in a clear, effective manner for general audiences and policy experts alike.
  • Significant experience in earned media, with understanding of media operations and news organizations and experience pitching press materials. Understanding of traditional and social media with a keen sense of how to adapt to changes in the landscape.
  • Strong commitment to accuracy and keen attention to detail.
  • Native or highly proficient in English language. Spanish proficiency highly desirable.
