Job Description:

The Interim Executive Director (IED) will serve as the chief operating officer of Friends of UNFPA. The IED will provide organizational leadership and on-going administrative, financial, and management oversight while Friends of UNFPA searches for a permanent Executive Director.

Friends of UNFPA is undertaking a multi-year journey to expand its fundraising capacity and impact. We are seeking an action-oriented change agent who can build critical partnerships with key stakeholders and grow, manage, and energize a team. This is a critical time of starting to lay the foundations for organizational change and growth.

The IED reports to the Board of Directors and is responsible for carrying out plans and policies authorized by the Board. 

Responsibilities:

  • Oversee the efficient and effective day-to-day operation of the organization
  • Manage and build effective external partnerships and working relationships with key stakeholders
  • Identify, assess, and inform the Board of Directors of internal and external issues that affect the organization
  • Foster a positive, healthy and safe work environment in accordance with all appropriate legislation and regulations
  • Foster effective team work between the Board and the IED and between the IED and staff
  • Oversee the implementation of the human resources policies, procedures and practices including the development of job description for all staff
  • Participate in fundraising activities as appropriate
  • Approve expenditures within the authority delegated by the Board
  • Ensure that sound bookkeeping and accounting procedures are followed
  • Administer the funds of the organization according to the approved budget and monitor the monthly cash flow of the organization
  • Ensure that the organization complies with all legislation covering taxation and withholding payments
  • Work with the Board and staff to maintain and enhance working relationships and collaborative aligned partnerships with UNFPA, funders, and other organizations to help achieve the goals of the organization
  • Monitor the day-to-day delivery of the fundraising and communications activities of the organization to maintain or improve quality
  • Ensure that personnel, donor and volunteer files are securely stored and privacy/confidentiality is maintained
  • Provide support to the Board by preparing meeting agenda and supporting materials
  • Conduct official correspondence on behalf of the Board as appropriate and jointly with the Board when appropriate

Candidate requirements

Candidate requirements:

All candidates should have proven leadership, coaching, and relationship management experience. Concrete demonstrable experience and other qualifications include:

  • Advanced degree, with at least 10 years of senior management experience; track record of effectively leading a nonprofit organization and staff
  • Excellence in organizational management with the ability to coach staff, manage, and develop high-performance teams, set and achieve strategic objectives, and manage a budget in a dynamic environment
  • Track record of successful change management within organizations Track record of building successful partnerships with other organizations and key stakeholders
  • Past success working with a Board of Directors with the ability to cultivate existing board member relationships
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills; a persuasive and passionate communicator with excellent interpersonal and multidisciplinary project skills and the ability to engage a wide range of stakeholders and cultures
  • Action-oriented, adaptable, and innovative approach to planning
  • Ability to work effectively in collaboration with diverse groups of people
  • Passion, idealism, integrity, positive attitude, mission-driven, and self-directed.
