Job Description:

The Interim Executive Director (IED) will serve as the chief operating officer of Friends of UNFPA. The IED will provide organizational leadership and on-going administrative, financial, and management oversight while Friends of UNFPA searches for a permanent Executive Director.

Friends of UNFPA is undertaking a multi-year journey to expand its fundraising capacity and impact. We are seeking an action-oriented change agent who can build critical partnerships with key stakeholders and grow, manage, and energize a team. This is a critical time of starting to lay the foundations for organizational change and growth.

The IED reports to the Board of Directors and is responsible for carrying out plans and policies authorized by the Board. 

Responsibilities:

    STRATEGIC VISION AND LEADERSHIP

  • Work closely with staff, Board and UNFPA to implement the development, fundraising and communications plans while insuring budget, staff and priorities are aligned with the core mission and joint plans
  • Provide leadership to staff and ensure continued development of a professional and efficient organization
  • Cultivate strong and transparent working relationships with the Board, staff and SPB regarding the measurement of financial and impact performance
  • Provide oversight over building a diverse Board that is highly engaged and are willing to leverage and secure resources 
  • FUNDRAISING AND COMMUNICATIONS

  • Work closely with staff and UNFPA to execute a comprehensive marketing/branding and development strategy that will enhance revenue from individual donors, including foundations and corporations
  • With support from staff, create and communicate metrics regarding various marketing and fundraising strategies to guide the most successful outcomes
  • Grow the fundraising and communications department strategically including staffing, marketing and fundraising investments within the budget of the organization
  • STRENGTHENING INFRASTRUCTURE AND OPERATIONS

  • Oversee the efficient and effective daily operations including a positive, safe work environment in accordance with the human resources guidelines and any pertinent legislation
  • While ensuring sound accounting procedures are followed, approve expenditures within the authority of the board
  • Administer funds according to the approved budget, monitor monthly cashflow and comply with legislation covering taxation and withholding
  • Ensure that personnel, donor and volunteer files are securely stored and that confidentiality is maintained
  • Prepare meeting agendas and materials for quarterly Board meetings and conduct official correspondence on behalf of the Board and jointly when appropriate

Candidate requirements

Candidate requirements:

All candidates should have proven leadership, coaching, and relationship management experience. Concrete demonstrable experience and other qualifications include:

  • Advanced degree, with at least 10 years of senior management experience; track record of effectively leading a nonprofit organization and staff.
  • Excellence in organizational management with the ability to coach staff, manage, and develop high-performance teams, set and achieve strategic objectives, and manage a budget in a dynamic environment
  • Strong fundraising and marketing/branding experience and capacity building in a medium size organization
  • Track record of successful change management within an organization; building successful partnerships and working with key stakeholders
  • Past success working with a Board of Directors with the ability to cultivate existing board member relationships
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills; a persuasive and passionate communicator with excellent interpersonal and multidisciplinary project skills and the ability to engage a wide range of stakeholders and cultures
  • Action-oriented, adaptable, and innovative approach to planning
  • Ability to work effectively in collaboration with diverse groups of people
  • Passion, idealism, integrity, positive attitude, mission-driven, and self-directed
