Background

Based within the Division for External Relations, the Goodwill Ambassador (GWA) Section seeks to utilise celebrity and high profile support to leverage the strategic communications, fundraising and advocacy goals of UNHCR.

Job description

This is a unique opportunity for the right person to join a high performing team and develop their career in working with influencers for the furtherance of humanitarian goals.

The role will assist in the recruitment and management of celebrity supporters and talent, including field missions and media/digital outputs; manage artist liaison on a key global event; and support UNHCR staff globally in their local ambassador work.

Reporting to a Senior External Relations Officer (GWA), the GWA Relations Officer will support three
Senior External Relations Officers and the Head of the GWA Programme in the day-to-day
recruitment, management and stewardship of celebrities and high profile influencers/supporters.
Working to the overall GWA strategy and 2019 plan, the Goodwill Ambassador Relations Officer
will assist in the following:

  • Relationship management: coordinate the day to day activities of a number of existing high profile supporters as directed, in support of key organizational objectives related to advocacy, fundraising and awareness raising
  • To research, prospect and recruit new celebrity supporters in full consultation with the relevant Bureaux and Regional or National offices and as agreed with supervisor.
  • To act as journey lead on specified field missions with celebrities, ensuring objectives are delivered, and including delivering communications outputs across different platforms including social media, media and film.
  • With guidance from the Head of the team, to provide advice and support to staff acting as focal points to national GWA/HPS, in line with official GWA Guidelines and best practice Toolkit, and to oversee annual reporting on their activities
  • To assist in the recruitment and management of artists/talent for the Nansen Refugee Award
  • To support Senior External Relations Officers (GWA) in delivering celebrity support for specific fundraising and communications campaigns and partnerships, including corporate partnerships, emergency campaigns and digital initiatives
  • To help monitor and evaluate the impact and ROI of celebrity engagement
  • To support on specific key media and communications moments with Goodwill Ambassadors, including writing key messages, draft media releases, briefing Ambassadors for interviews, speech writing, captions, quotes, scripting films for social.

Candidate requirements

University degree - BA / BSc

Work Experience

Minimum 5 years of relevant (international) job experience with graduate degree (equivalent of a Master’s), 6 years with undergraduate degree (equivalent of a BA/BS) including:

  1. Celebrity recruitment and management including in a cause related environment
  2. Managing celebrity projects with multi-media components including broadcast, print, film, photographic and digital (social media)
  3. Handling celebrity related communications plans and outputs
  4. Project managing celebrity events
  5. Working with celebrity agents, publicist and managers to reach mutually agreed outcomes
  6. Experience of international development, including hosting VIPs on field missions

  • Strong project management skills and the ability to manage multiple tasks to deadline

  • Technological literacy and ability to apply celebrity support via digital engagement techniques
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with people in a multi-cultural, multi-ethnic environment with sensitivity and respect for diversity
  • Knowledge of fundraising techniques
  • Ability to develop and maintain effective work relationships with international team members

Language

  • Required: fluency in written and spoken English
  • Desirable: fluency in written and spoken UN language, notably French, Spanish, or Arabic
