The United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) is the world's largest humanitarian agency, fighting hunger worldwide.

 The Japan Association for WFP (JAWFP) is a national NGO in Japan that exists to support the work of WFP through fundraising, advocacy and awareness raising. As JAWFP increases its focus and investment in individual giving, the association has created an exciting new role - Head of Individual Giving - based Yokohama, Japan.

JAWFP, working in close partnership with the Private Sector Partnerships and Fundraising team within WFP, is increasing investment in individual giving and is looking to attract new supporters through a range of activities including face to face fundraising, direct mail and digital engagement. This new role will lead the development of individual giving so that JAWFP can grow rapidly over the next few years and contribute ever more to the vital, life-saving work of WFP. 

Job description

Key Accountabilities:

Develop and manage the implementation of an individual fundraising strategy for JAWFP, with a focus on:

  • Creating a culture of individual giving which focuses on engaging individuals, building their satisfaction/loyalty and identifying opportunities to engage supporters across the organization towards the mission of a world without hunger.
  • Managing an investment plan for attracting new supporters that includes maximizing opportunities to acquire leads and new donors and the assessment of performance across channels with the re-allocation of investment as needed to maximise return on investment.
  • Ensuring that JAWFP has best in class supporter stewardship and engagement activities that maximise the long-term value, engagement and satisfaction of supporters.
  • Developing and implementing a legacy fundraising strategy for JAWFP that inspires both current supporters of JAWFP and the wider public to consider leaving a gift in their will to support JAWFP.
  • Optimizing digital income streams and identifying new ways to raise money from individuals digitally.
  • Overseeing individual fundraising campaigns, working across teams to integrate with other channels and reach set goals,
  • Analysing campaign metrics and key performance indicators to ensure best practices and lessons learned and sharing these metrics/KPls with senior management.
  • Tracking global developments in fundraising, maintaining relationships with key contacts and ensuring that JAWFP has an outward looking approach that learns from relevant experience in other organisations and countries.
  • Leading and inspiring the team and guide the individual work plans of team members, enabling training and skills development along the way. Managing all HR/administrative tasks relating to team members, including performance evaluations and recruitment of staff.
  • Overseeing the management of external vendors and agencies, including required procurement processes, with the goal of building dynamic, long term partnerships with suppliers eager to work with JAWFP.

Candidate requirements


Individual Giving and Fundraising Experience: 

  • Minimum 10 years professional experience in individual giving in a front-line fundraising environment at large national/international organizations, including the management of a significant budget.
  • Demonstrated expertise in multiple individual giving techniques particularly digital engagement and including face to face, DRTV, telemarketing and direct mail.
  • Ability to provide technical expertise, facilitation and knowledge sharing on individual giving channel best practices, digital giving, fundraising content, digital systems and fundraising analytics support.
  • Proven ability in individual donor/supporter conversion and development and donor acquisition.
  • Experience managing and deploying a marketing budget as well as guiding specialized individual giving fundraising agencies and providers.
  • Ability to lead a diverse team and work within an international environment.


  • Ability to meet and prioritize multiple deadlines and work as part of a multi-disciplinary team in a fast-paced, high-pressure environment.
  • Excellent written and oral communications skills and technological literacy.
  • Ability to work in multicultural settings that involve many stakeholders.
  • Data-driven with strong analytical, numeracy and problem-solving skills.
  • Resourcefulness, entrepreneurial approach, maturity of judgment and tact.
  • Creative asset design and in-depth knowledge of web and mobile technologies a plus.
  • Experience of managing external creative agencies and fundraising suppliers.
  • Strong project management skills including planning and schedule creation.
  • Fluency in oral and written Japanese and high level of competence in English
  • Deep and keen insight on Japanese individual donners’ psychological and habitual characteristics.

Additional comments

  • Selected candidate will be employed on a fixed-term contract (one-year renewable contract) with a probationary period 3 months. 
  • JAWFP offers an attractive compensation and benefits package, including 15 days’ annual leave, pension plan, and medical insurance.
