Location: Ideally HQ based (hybrid flexible working model- at least 2 days in office/week); candidates in France, Italy, or Netherlands may be considered

Salary:   £33,000 – £38,000 UK based (dependent upon experience)

Compassion in World Farming International is the leading international farm animal welfare charity, campaigning to improve the lives of millions of farm animals through advocacy, lobbying for legislative change, and positive engagement with the global food industry. Our established international Food Business programme aims to raise baseline standards for farm animals by securing commitments, ensuring compliance and facilitating implementation of higher welfare policies and practices. In addition, we aim to drive corporate meat reduction strategies and targets in line with planetary health requirements, via our newly launched Rethinking Food workstream.

Our work is based on scientific evidence and best practice and as such we are recognised as the credible partner on farm animal welfare to the major food retailers, food service companies, manufacturers and producers.

We are now looking for a skilled farm animal welfare scientist to join our Food Business team. The Food Business Research Manager (Better Chicken) will contribute to the further development of our technical resources and assets on broiler chicken welfare, in support of the corporate asks of the European Chicken Commitment (ECC) and their implementation. You will play a central role in strengthening the technical credibility of the European Food Business team via supporting food business managers in their external meetings and with knowledge transfer, as well as participating in external broiler fora and working groups.

The right candidate will have a proven scientific background and good practical knowledge of broiler welfare, production and supply chain. You will also need to be able to condense large volumes of scientific evidence into succinct summaries and cases of support for the welfare change we ask. The role will require developing and delivering multiple workflows to deadline, with a strong problem solving ‘can do’ attitude.

Compassion in World Farming International is absolutely committed to providing equal opportunities for everyone regardless of their background. We value diversity and lived experience, and acknowledge the underrepresentation of people from certain backgrounds, both within our organisation and across the sector. We welcome applications from underrepresented groups, whether these be of ethnicity, gender, identity, religion, physical ability, sexual orientation or other.

Please note that the remuneration quoted is for a UK based employee.  This may be adjusted for other European countries as appropriate and in line with our country office benchmarking.

Job description

Job title: Research Manager (Better Chicken)

Department:    Food Business

Reviewing Manager:   Global Head of Research (Food Business)

Job Type:  Fixed term full time contract to end March 2025.

Location: Ideally HQ based (hybrid flexible working model- at least 2 days in office/week); candidates in France, Italy, or Netherlands may be considered

Background:

Compassion in World Farming International was founded in 1967 by Peter Roberts, a British dairy farmer, in response to the rise of intensive animal factory farming. In his lifetime, Compassion was instrumental in the legislative bans on barren battery cages, veal crates, and sow stalls in the UK and Europe, and the recognition of animals as sentient beings.

Compassion in World Farming is the leading international farm animal welfare charity, campaigning to improve the lives of millions of farm animals through advocacy, lobbying for legislative change, and positive engagement with the global food industry. Our established international Food Business programme aims to raise baseline standards for farm animals by securing commitments, ensuring compliance, and facilitating implementation of higher welfare policies and practices. Our primary animal focus is the removal of cages and improving the welfare of meat chickens and fish produced in aquaculture. In addition, we aim to drive corporate meat, fish, dairy and egg reduction strategies and targets in line with planetary health requirements, via our newly launched Rethinking Food workstream.
