About the Global Gas and Oil Network

The Global Gas and Oil Network (GGON) is an international non-profit network of civil society organisations established to support global efforts to stop fossil fuel expansion and catalyse a just and equitable managed decline of existing production in line with limiting global warming to the ambitious goal of the Paris Agreement (1.5 ºC). Over 200 organisations globally are engaged in the Network, and this number continues to grow. 

GGON is supporting efforts to stop new oil and gas extraction and infrastructure, including campaigns to limit public and private finance of oil and gas development, as well as legal, research and communications strategies, to thereby enable ambitious action from decision makers for an equitable oil and gas phase-out, and supporting. The Network hosts strategic gatherings, provides coordination, research and analysis and is working with partners to build a community of practice. GGON operates with a small secretariat that is guided by a strategic advisory committee.

 

Job description

Scope of work:

The Strategic Communications consultant will support GGON’s Communications Manager and chair & members of the Strategic Communications Working Group to develop a three-year meta communications strategy, including recommending a process by which to do so, facilitating that process, taking the lead in drafting a first draft of a communications strategy and finalizing the strategy in consultation with the GGON team.

This project must be highly participative, and the consultant will be expected to run a series of consultation meetings and roundtables with network members to inform, refine and build consensus around the strategy.

 

Tasks

Overall, this is expected to be a 6 months process starting in early October and ending in March/April. Key activities include: 

  • Designing the process and outlining the milestones for next 6 months; holding one on one interviews or meetings as necessary for the design phase

  • Holding virtual regional roundtable discussions with communicators and perhaps one on one interviews with selected experts and or hold a series of regional online roundtable meetings

  • Lead on developing and delivering the communications retreat in early 2023 (Convene comms strategy retreat with working group & other members or thematic experts in order to collate content for the draft strategy)

  • Deliver the 3 yr communications strategy to the network (Q2-2023)

Part-time starting from week of 3rd October 2022 until 31 March 2023

Candidate requirements

Skills required:

  • Over 10 years experience in communications and/or campaigning 

  • Demonstrated experience in producing communications strategies for networks and organizations or networks in the CSO sector 

  • Demonstrated experience coordinating among civil society organizations

  • Familiarity and experience with fossil fuels and climate change issues is highly desirable

  • Excellent organizational, written and verbal communication; ability to take initiative and work independently

  • Experience in working with traditional and social media or on communications for networks is highly desirable

  • Meeting and network  facilitation skills essential  

  • Skills in holding collective spaces
