The Development and Outreach Department of Human Rights Watch (“HRW”) is seeking highly-qualified applicants for the position of Associate Director to take the lead on fundraising and outreach events and initiatives in the Geneva office. The Associate Director will report to the Director of Development and Outreach in Geneva.

Job description


  1. Manage and oversee fundraising, outreach and cultivation events including HRW’s annual Voices for Justice dinner, conferences, researcher briefings, privately hosted dinners, and other events; 
  2. Oversee event logistics including branding elements, materials, merchandise strategy, and follow-up; 
  3. Manage all aspects of the Geneva Committee including organizing regular committee meetings, sub-committee meetings and communications and working with members to develop fundraising, outreach and cultivation initiatives and to engage their networks; 
  4. Create agendas, prepare background materials, and conduct follow-up to meetings; 
  5. Research, identify, cultivate, service and solicit prospective donors and existing supporters; 
  6. Represent the work of HRW to existing and prospective supporters; 
  7. Identify areas of interest for our community with regards to HRW’s work, and develop the content of events accordingly, thus creating meaningful experiences and educational opportunities; 
  8. Identify new outreach opportunities and form relationships with partner organizations; 
  9. Manage income tracking, expenditure budgets and regularly monitor the department budget to ensure that resources are allocated appropriately; and 
  10. Perform other responsibilities as may be required.


Candidate requirements


Education: A bachelor’s degree in international relations, social sciences, or related studies is required. An advanced degree in human rights or philanthropy is desirable.   

Experience: A minimum of five years of fundraising experience is required.

Related Skills and Knowledge:

  1. Proven success in creating and managing major gifts programs and highly skilled at managing high-level donor relationships are required. 
  2. Demonstrated experience overseeing large fundraising events, such as the annual dinner, and smaller bespoke events is required. 
  3. Creativity, initiative, follow-through and excellent organizational skills are required. 
  4. Strong interpersonal skills in order to work collaboratively within HRW as well as with external partners are required. 
  5. Strong oral and written communications skills in English and French are required. 
  6. Demonstrated commitment to human rights and/or international issues and the capacity to master and represent the mission and programs of HRW are essential. 
  7. An entrepreneurial and disciplined self-starter who can work independently, but also function as a member of a development team, is highly desirable. 
  8. Familiarity with fundraising in Geneva is strongly preferred.
