Job description

New York University Abu Dhabi (NYUAD) seeks to appoint a Director, Philanthropy and Partnerships, reporting to the Executive Director of Advancement and Philanthropy. 

The Director, Philanthropy and Partnerships will be responsible to capture, stimulate and translate NYUAD business needs and opportunities into attractive value propositions for donors.  The incumbent will also lead donor prospecting efforts with specific focus on the international donors’ community.  The Director will co-lead the design and continuous improvement of the Office of Advancement and Philanthropy strategy ensuring also communication and visibility of the office.  The individual will be responsible for a fund raising goal, which will be determined at the start of each academic year, in order to reach that goal they will need to cultivate and solicit individuals, corporations and foundations in target sectors.  Also they will need to ensure that donors and key stakeholder (international, regional and local) are continuously engaged and satisfied.

Key Responsibilities

  • Identify NYUAD funding needs and opportunities, creating a constant dialogue with all key departments and areas, suggesting prioritization based on NYUAD and market opportunities
  • Design and implement philanthropic products distilled from NYUAD needs and opportunities to be proposed to donors, “packaging” NYUAD needs and opportunities into language that is in tune with the philanthropic market and based on the “shared value creation” concept. Combining, when appropriate needs and opportunities that cut across different disciplines and that are presented from the donor’s perspective
  • Design and implement philanthropic vehicles useful to facilitate giving process and maximize the donors experience and impact, creating engagement tools (giving circles, philanthropic investment funds). Such vehicles will also focus on increasing sustainability and scalability of the partnerships
  • Engage and manage key external stakeholders when functional to deliver the Office of Advancement and Philanthropy mission
  • Lead the research and market analysis on the international prospects and maintain a healthy pipeline of prospects
  • Support the Executive Director in designing the Office of Advancement and Philanthropy strategies and measure the effectiveness guaranteeing continuous improvement
  • Lead the design and development of lean and effective processes and systems
  • Be the focal point in the department for best practice in philanthropy in an international context
  • Lead the positioning of NYUAD Office of Advancement and Philanthropy into the international philanthropic community as the “best in class” and point of reference for philanthropists, producing knowledge pieces e.g. articles, white papers, etc. that will contribute to advancement of philanthropic engagement in the world and therefore positioning of NYUAD as a leader in the sector
  • Cultivate and solicit major gifts to support NYUAD  priority programs and initiatives; identify and  prioritize a portfolio of prospects and develop  appropriate strategies to secure gifts, partner with other internal stakeholders to collaborate and develop programs and fundraising events that engage and motivate the portfolio of major gift donors
  • Design and manage negotiation, deal shaping and deal closure for own areas of responsibility making sure they are compliant with NYU and NYUAD policies and processes
  • Oversee team members when appropriate and offer stewardship and mentorship in order to growth team effectiveness
  • Design and implement an Office of Advancement and Philanthropy engagement model to offer a consistent experience to donors and partners
  • Lead the monitoring and evaluation process to make sure that Office of Advancement and Philanthropy is set to exceed the expectations of donors and key stakeholders
  • Manage directly the engagement process of the donor base from own area or responsibility

 

Candidate requirements

Education Requirements

Essential

  • Master degree in a related field or equivalent professional experience (minimum of 10) with a Bachelor’s degree

 

Experience Requirements

Essential

  • Minimum of 10 years of experience with an established track record in working with donors and in the philanthropy arena with hands-on experience of devising strategies to deliver growth and add value, in line with objectives
  • Significant experience of working towards annual financial targets and of devising effective marketing communications for new and existing donors
  • Excellent problem solving, influencing and relationship building capabilities (internal and external stakeholders)
  • Proven experience in managing international donors
  • Strong management skills and use of a variety of tools, including; research, benchmarking and analysis, reporting on income streams, creating budgets and detailed plans, report and proposal writing and delivery, project management and management of service levels, measuring success and evaluation methods
  • Able to create best practice tools and approaches for new work stream
  • Able to create an inclusive and participative culture
  • A strong teamwork ethic and collaborative working style
  • Able to represent the institution internally and externally as a credible ambassador
