Comic Relief has enjoyed enormous success through its much loved brands of Red Nose Day and Sport Relief which have delivered over £1billion in the last 30 years.  We are now looking to broaden the ways in which we raise money, and have an all year fundraising presence and the role of Executive Director, Partnerships and Fundraising is central to our new ambitions.

Reporting directly to our CEO and part of an executive team of six working together to build and drive the organisation’s strategic plan to deliver a modern, digital, global, healthy and happy organisation that achieves year on year annual income growth consistent with Comic Reliefs purpose.

This role will be responsible for ensuring that we meet our ambitious fundraising targets through existing and new partnership deals, fundraising activity and global licenses. You will lead a multi-faceted team that manage key relationships and will focus on maximising revenue opportunities from corporate and institutional funding partnerships, philanthropy, public, workplace and schools fundraising, as well as developing our global strategy.

The Partnerships and Fundraising Team consists of three teams; Partnerships, a team of 19, Public Fundraising, a team of 12 and Global Franchises, a team of three.

Job description

Responsibilities

Drive strategy

  • Lead on Comic Relief’s partnerships and fundraising strategy
  • Ensure alignment of commercial performance in line with  strategy

Corporate and Funding Partnerships

The Partnerships team is responsible for bringing in £50m - £70m in income annually

  • Secure the backing and sponsorship of the most relevant brands to  audiences, ensuring that our relationships are mutually beneficial and position Comic Relief as an equal partner
  • Ensure that the deals that we broker are ethically aligned with the work that we do
  • Oversee the development of our future corporate partnership strategy, policy and plans to ensure achievement of business objectives within our corporate governance framework
  • Lead and inspire staff to identify, build and grow profitable opportunities through new and existing relationships with foundations, institutions and supporters to maximise their funding and strategic partnership potential

Fundraising

The Fundraising team is responsible for bringing in £30m - £50m in income annually

  • Develop and lead Comic Relief’s fundraising strategy enabling income to grow year on year
  • Set ambitious fundraising targets, challenging the team to be creative and innovative in their approach
  • Develop and lead a business operating model that capitalises and expands on creative capabilities and our networks 
  • Ensure that our fundraising activity is engaging and inspiring, exploiting every opportunity to educate our supporters about the work that we do

Global franchises

  • Explore, build and develop our global opportunities, harnessing our strategic relationships with existing and new corporate partners
  • Maximise UK activity that has potential for global engagement by engaging partners with a global presence while mitigating reputational and operational risks

Candidate requirements

Essential Education and Skills:

  • Significant experience in leading and developing high performing teams.
  • Proven strategic experience of negotiating and managing multi-million, multi-faceted corporate partnerships in the corporate or voluntary sector.
  • Proven track record in growing income and exceeding targets. 

Key Competencies:

  • Exceptional communication, commercial, networking, influencing and persuading skills.
  • Think strategically and be able to evaluate decisions in the short, medium and long term.
  • Building and sustaining effective working relationships internally and externally.
