Background

Founded in 1991 to support local activists and journalists in the collapsing Yugoslavia who stood against rising intolerance and hate speech, IWPR has grown into an independent not-for-profit organization that works with media and civil society to promote positive change in closed, in conflict and in transitioning societies worldwide. From home offices in the United States and The Netherlands, and our global headquarters in London, we work on the ground in more than two dozen of the world’s most challenging environments.

 We have recently undertaken a restructure of our development department and this role is a direct result of that change. We have some exciting new business coming in and are looking for someone who can hit the ground running. Reporting to the Global Director in Washington, DC, you will lead, identify and support new charity business opportunities in EU and the UK including fundraising and marketing campaigns, partnerships and institutional advancement programs.

 The incumbent will represent the IWPR to government agencies and targeted potential donors in the private sector across Europe. Develop new/and or continuing programming opportunities by building partnerships with international nongovernmental organizations, conceptualising projects and programs, and build relationships with key potential private donors in the private sector.

Job description

Primary responsibilities

  1.  Lead and coordinate winning proposals including overseeing and auditing the writing, budgeting, and submission. Lead the development of winning programming ideas to sustain and increase IWPR's programming. Monitor public and private sources of information for relevant RFPs and other potential funding opportunities.
  2.  Develop and implement strategies to identify, cultivate and solicit UK and EU governments, foundation grants, and to attract private funding. Represent IWPR at external events to develop a strong network of contacts amongst potential donors.
  3. Coordinate and steward on-going donor relationships. Identify and cultivate potential funding consortium and other strategic partners. Support the major donor fundraising with UK and Europe-based prospects. Assist in coordination of donor events.
  4. Devise, contribute to, implement and evaluate long-term fundraising plans to support IWPR programming and core operations. Track and report on fundraising performance against plans. Provide support, advice and guidance to IWPR staff carrying out fundraising activities in the field to ensure a consistent and coordinated fundraising approach. As appropriate, work with web site/digital team to ensure high quality online content related to fundraising.
  5. Manages the work of assigned staff.
  • Prioritizes, organizes, distributes, and coordinates the flow of work.
  • Trains, guides, and advises staff.
  • Ensures adherence to the Global Code of Conduct, Employee Handbook, and other corporate and applicable policies, procedures, and schedules.
  • Makes recommendations concerning personnel actions.
  • Resolves routine operating problems as they arise.
  • Ensures protocols are followed to assist with the safety of staff and property.

 6. Undertakes other duties and projects as may be assigned from time to time.

Knowledge, Skills and Ability

  • Proven ability to submit winning proposals to donors for international not-for-profit organisations in the EU and UK. Ability to review proposal budgets for clarity and accuracy.
  • Proven ability to successfully administer a gifts program and oversee institutional grant management.
  • In-depth knowledge of the public and private donor pool for the EU and the UK.
  • Knowledge of media, conflict resolution, human rights, rule of law and international development sectors.
  • Proven ability to successfully plan, launch, manage and complete fundraising campaigns including corporate and individual gift programs. Knowledge of individual giving, donor programmes, and legacies. Understanding of marketing and public relations outreach.
  • High level of ability to effectively use internet research fundraising tools and databases, fundraising software and Microsoft Office.
  • Ability to think creatively in designing new programming and fundraising initiatives.
  • Excellent critical thinking skills and judgment. Demonstrated ability to make significant decisions on complex issues to achieve long-term results and strategic objectives.
  • Strong written communication skills, including demonstrated ability to write required documents in a clear, concise, well-organized manner. Adept at crafting clear and persuasive fundraising messages for a variety of needs, including donor correspondence, updates and promotional materials.
  • Strong presentation skills, including ability to prepare and give clear and engaging presentations to donors.
  • Demonstrated ability to build and maintain effective working relationships with donors, project stakeholders, in-country collaborators and staff at all levels of the organization. Proven ability to work effectively in a multi-cultural environment.
  • Proven ability to work collaboratively across departments to lead the development of compelling fundraising proposals, concept notes and other fundraising materials.
  • Proven ability to successfully manage a team. Strong mentoring and teambuilding skills.
  • Ability to communicate impeccably in English.

Education

  • Bachelor’s degree in marketing, international development, or related field.
  • Minimum ten years of progressively responsible experience successfully securing government, foundation, corporate and private grants and independent gifts and in navigating complex government funding agencies in the UK and Europe, completing government grant applications and designing logframes. Experience planning successful fundraising events. For-profit experience a plus.
  • Equivalent combination of education and experience.
