Our perfect candidate will lead a programme of campaign activities, delivering across Europe and beyond. You will lead a team at HQ, and coordinate work across Europe and beyond. This role encompasses global work, in an organisation that is on the brink of investing in and pushing for real growth. You will contribute, as a leader in our Global Engagement Team, to driving forward shared and integrated bold targets for the organisation, including increasing our supporter base. You will have a track record of campaign success and experience of supporting and coordinating teams delivering in different locations. You will deliver a step-change in our public campaigning, engaging new audiences and supporting the development of a movement. You will be working with a strong team to deliver concrete and measurable change for farm animals and to the global food and farming system.

Job Title: International Head of Public Campaigns

Contract Type:  Permanent, full-time 


Overall responsibility for leading, planning and delivering public campaigns which end factory farming. This role encompasses global work, in an organisation that is on the brink of investing in and pushing for real growth. Contributes, as a leader in our Global Engagement Team, to driving forward shared and integrated bold targets including increasing our supporter base and ‘voices’ – particularly our aim to secure 10 million voices by 2022. Responsible for delivering a step-change in our public campaigning approach, using innovative new approaches and reaching the broadest possible audience for our work. Provides support and coordination for our international offices’ campaigns teams, and drives continuous improvement in our campaigning approaches. Leads the delivery of campaigns which create concrete and measurable change for farm animals and to the global food and farming system.


  • Reports to the Director of Campaigns, member of the Campaigns Dept. Also part of the Global Engagement virtual team, who report jointly on progress against organisational objectives to Director of Campaigns and Director of International Fundraising Growth. Responsible for the management of the Campaigns team
  • Close working relationship with Head of PR and Communications
  • Current direct reports are Campaign Managers x 4 and Campaign Officer x 1, this team is expected to develop in the short-medium term.


  • Overall responsibility for driving UK and European campaigns activity and results. Responsible for driving public engagement as citizens in our campaigns.
  • Responsible, with Global Engagement team, for increasing our supporter base in line with our strategic plan.
  • Creation, development and oversight of outstanding public campaigns, with support from Director of Campaigns
  • Monitoring and evaluation of campaigns work
  • Strategic overview of campaigns activities and plans, including detailed knowledge of the roll out of each campaign over the short, medium and long term. In depth understanding of the ‘now and next’ of each campaign in each market.
  • Producing reports and information on the campaigns work of the organisation for internal audiences
  • Enhancing the public profile and perception of Compassion in World Farming and in particular that of its Chief Executive.
  • Maximising ability to deliver campaigns across key sectors of operation, including international offices, and the departments of Campaigns, Food Business and Research.
  • Ensuring excellent co-ordination with the Policy team and, with the Head of Policy, responsible for the delivery of AOP outcomes and objectives.


  • Responsible for the campaigns spend within the campaign budget
  • Responsible for the direction and management of the Campaigns team
  • Sign off on all campaigns materials and plans (or delegates)
  • Engages with all organisational activities that may provide a platform for enhancing the organisation’s and the CEO’s public profile and perception.
  • Suggests action to take on difficult cases.


Essential duties and responsibilities include the following:  Other duties may be assigned.


  • To play a key role in the strategic development of Compassion in World Farming, particularly focusing on developing increased public engagement with Compassion and our campaigning objectives in Europe
  • To ensure that Compassion’s campaigns engage the public and influence public opinion, as well as those who shape, make or fund public policy relating to farm animal welfare.
  • To ‘raise our game’ on public campaigning, implementing innovative new strategies
  • To provide strategic assistance, support and training for Compassion’s European and international staff to empower them to deliver effective campaigns work in their countries.
  • To ensure the fundraising teams, particularly major gifts, have the information they require for stewardship of donors
  • To lead to co-ordination of Compassion campaigning activities across all European markets, and potentially beyond

Raising Awareness and Profile of Compassion

  • Develop relationships with thought leaders, politicians and influencers (with Head of Policy)
  • Manage all Campaigns staff and external agencies employed by those teams
  • Plan and implement campaign strategies
  • Oversee the implementation of those strategies
  • Develop all aspects of campaigns plans
  • Oversee Compassion’s campaigns programme, including that part of the programme relating to the CEO and his role as chief spokesperson.
  • Sign-off public facing campaigns materials and plans
  • Develop and implement crisis management systems and plans.
  • Lead our response to breaking campaigning developments
  • Support the Director of Campaigns in the development of policy and position statements.
  • Evaluate the work of the campaigns team against key performance indicators.

Staff Development                                                                                                   

  • To ensure appropriate staff development and training, including where required specialist campaigns coaching.
  • To delegate tasks that fall with your scope effectively across the teams
  • Personal development: to manage workload effectively, with support from Director of Campaigns, to ensure healthy work-life balance and feasible portfolio of activities


  • To ensure the correct maintenance of the department’s budgetary and other records

Candidate requirements

We are looking for an exceptional indivdual with:

  • Demonstrable experience in a senior campaigning role
  • Strong strategic capacity
  • Background in policy or social change
  • Strong team leadership
  • Track record of creating change through public campaigning
  • Excellent communication skills
  • Ability to develop and implement public campaign strategies
  • Ability to manage budgets
  • Capacity to work within a team to deliver organisational aspirations
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills, both oral and written
  • Good relationship building skills
  • Ability to work on own initiative
  • Digital campaigning expertise
